Work Experience week for Williamwood High School pupil

Work Experience: Williamwood High School

On the week beginning 23rd January 2023, the Amey South-West Trunk Roads team hosted S4 Williamwood High School pupil, Alec Garwood for a work experience week. Alec spent his time at Amey getting an understanding of what different departments do.

He was introduced to social value at Amey and created a social value plan for the Dumfries and Galloway area, focusing on employment skills, community engagement, and local economy growth. On his second day, Alec spent time with the quality management team and had the opportunity to try his hand at creating an audit checklist and carrying out a mock audit. On Wednesday, Alec undertook environmental awareness training and a variety of activities to demonstrate an environmental assessment that might be carried out before a given scheme. On his fourth day, Alec worked with the civil engineering team and was given two bridge-building tasks that showed how to work to a deadline and to a budget. On his fifth and final day, Alec was given a tour of the Polmadie salt barn and shown how to write a CV. He also sat a mock interview for a finance apprenticeship, a role he was interested in applying for.

Alec enjoyed his week with Amey stating: ‘I enjoyed learning about the different departments and all the jobs that make up the organisation. I liked the wide range of departments I got to go to. I think my favourite task of the week was the bridge building task with the structures team’.
